Touch is such an integral part of our lives, yet its centrality might go unnoticed. For some, however, the lack of being able to touch and be touched by their loved ones is a painful reality: all those couples in a long-distance relationship, families living across the seas from each other, grandparents in another town… I am sure that for these people, the things listed below hardly come as a surprise. But let’s give it a go!

Did you know that…

  1. A specific kind of receptor exists on the skin dedicated just for a gentle, soft touch?
  2. Touch is one of the first senses to develop?
  3. Touch tightens social bonds?
  4. Touch is a form of communication: it amplifies and gives depth to our verbal communication?
  5.  A touch always carries a meaning?
  6. Words can be used to touch as well – maybe you have experiences how words evoke feelings?
  7. Touch has health benefits: it reduces stress and lowers blood pressure?

As David Linden, a professor of Neuroscience, says on his TED talk:  “Does all this touchy-feely stuff matter? The answer is yes it does.” (I definitely recommend checking his full talk out!)

Is there anything you would add to the list based on your own experiences?
